Overview

Mullayanagiri (also known as MULLAIAHNA GIRI) is the highest peak of Karnataka state located in Bababudangiri range of Chikmagalur district. Mullayanagiri is 12 km from Chikmagalur, 265 km from Bangalore and 107 km from Mangalore. Mullayanagiri is part of the Bababudangiri hill range of western ghats.  It derives its name from a tomb at the summit that’s dedicated to Mulappa Swamy, a holy man who’s said to have meditated in caves nearby. The height of Mullayanagiri is 6330 ft (1930 meters) and it is regarded as the highest peak between Himalayas and Nilgiris. There is a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva on top of the hill. The small hillock in the temple premises is the highest point in Karnataka. A cave and a Nandi statue are at a walkable distance from the temple. Nearby attractions are Kemmangundi, Bababudangiri, and Hebbe fall. Mullayanagiri is the trekker's paradise.

The place is perfect for those looking for solitude as well as visitors with an adventurous streak. Chikmagalur serves as the nearest town to Mullayanagiri peak. You can explore the small caves, which are located just below the peak, and also view. statues of Shiva's celestial bull Nandi on the way up. There is a temple of Lord Shiva on the hilltop. Standing atop the peak on a clear day, you can see the Western Ghats in their full-fledged glory. Trekking at this place is a memorable experience. You can enjoy the speed of the cold wind that is hitting you. It will be a good experience if you reach this place by 7 AM.

Best time to visit Mullayanagiri: The best time to visit Mullayanagiri is from September to April. The winter months are a wonderful period since temperatures range between 14o and 32oC. Know Before you go

  • The location is awesome scenic beauty adventurous if chosen to go via bike.  Bikes are allowed until the top parking location. don't fall in the trap of jeep wallas, who may ask you to park bikes at the starting point.
  • Early morning vehicle will be allowed until the foot of the hill. Post 9 am you will have to park at a distance and trek till the foot of the hill.
  • There is a small cave on the top, just down the Nandi statue. Many of them are not aware of the same.
  • Note that no alcoholic drinks are permitted, and they will check vehicles sometimes.
  • The road gets narrow and lots of curves. Traffic is high on weekends/holidays. if you want to enjoy this place visit on weekdays.
  • Warm clothing and woolen caps are an absolute must.
  • Please note, No Restaurant, NO ATM, NO Credit Card facility in the top.  So please carry cash and enough eatables for munching.
  • The path from Sarpadhari is steep and at times has a 60-degree incline. This trek is definitely not for novices.
  • As the road is narrow and way for only half a car to pass through or overtake, either one of you needs to land your half of the car away from the pitch road very often.  Be slow when you are about to pull your car back on to the main pitch road. Its a real test for cars with less clearance. Be very very cautious when you overtake keeping concern for the approaching one. There are about 4-5 switchbacks/hairpin bends.
  • There are approximately 470 steps. if you want to reach the top be prepared to climb.
  • It's advisable to wear the best walking shoes.
  • No bathrooms at the top, so make a note of it.  Washroom facility is available near the parking area but badly maintained.
  • Security some time open the gates in the late evening before sunset only if the rush is less
  • The road to Mulyangiri by self car is Ok till the shiv temple after that road is really risky as there are no boundaries or tar road to the last stop. Do not use your own car, use the jeeps available for rent. The road conditions are bad.
  • Don't expect much here other than the clouds and the beautiful sunrise.
  • Never let loose the kids/seniors as there is no proper approach to the hilltop. Keep holding them.
