Chelavara waterfall is a natural waterfall formed by a small tributary of the Cauvery River located in Chelavara village of Kodagu district in Karnataka, is one of the major tourist attractions spots of the region. It is bordered by Kannur district of Kerala. It is merely 16 km from Vijarpet. Pay attention to the rock, over which the waters come cascading down – it looks like a tortoise, earning the falls the local name of Embepare or tortoise. Chelavara waterfall is positioned between lush green forests. This Beautiful and scenic waterfall and the surrounding make a huge gift by mother nature and is a part of private property. The rainy season is the best time to visit here to see the perfect beauty of the falls. Reaching here is very easy so anyone can see this fall without any problems. These falls are seasonal as there is not much flow here during summers. Its beauty is worth praiseworthy post monsoon. From the months of August till November, these waterfalls warmly invite visitors. Since the area is surrounded by Chomakundu hills, the famous spot for trekking, these waterfalls attract tourists late till December.

Tips

• To reach fall One has to trek about 300 odd meters from the road head upwards and then walk downwards to reach up to the fall. The view is AWESOME but be careful while trekking as it's not easy and could be slippery as well.
•  Visit the falls during the monsoon season or just after it from June to October.
  
• Be careful also when traversing the heavy stones to reach nearer to waterfalls as the stones get smoothness and slippery due to the continuous passage of water over them.  It is better to wear good shoes to avoid slipping.
  
• During the rainy season, the place is slippery and with the presence of leeches at times. extremely slippery route and can be a dangerous slip.
• Be careful and test the ground before you keep a step as loose soil may give way.
• Swimming is prohibited. not allowed to reach the water, as it is dangerous, Unfortunately, many human lives were lost here. Chelavara Falls is said to be 100 Feet deep, with the water flow having high suction, where even expert swimmers can lose their control.
• Kindly respect the “Danger signs Boards”- they are for our safety! There are danger signs all over. Locals advise not getting into the water. more than 20 people have died here.
• Isolated place – NO FOOD or water No proper Restaurants, particularly for Vegies. so please carry your own stuff 
• Visit early to this place and then if possible YOU can plan a Trek to Brahmagiri Hills.
