The present-day city was founded by Kempe Gowda in the year 1537. After India gained independence in 1947, Bangalore is home to many of the most well-recognized colleges and research institutions. Bengaluru is Home to Bugle Rock This natural rock formation that sprung up over 3, 000 million years ago continues to dumbfound scientists and fill them with awe. It juts out from a flat piece of land and is spread over sixteen acres. Bugle Rock is a humongous rock with a garden and a watchtower built by Kempe Gowda, the founder of the city. The word Bengalooru was in turn derived from the phrase 'bende kaalu ooru', meaning 'the town of boiled beans'. There is a story behind naming the city as the 'town of boiled beans'.

It is said that King Ballala of the Hoysala dynasty once got lost in the jungle and was very tired and hungry. In the jungle, he came across a poor and old woman, who offered him some boiled beans. As an expression of his gratitude towards the woman, the King named the place as 'bende kaalu ooru'. However, there is other historical evidence that reveals that the name 'Bengalooru' was recorded much before the reign of King Ballala. 

Founder of Bangalore  The Time of Kempe Gowda

Kempe Gowda, known as the founder of Bangalore, played a very important in the shaping of the city. A feudal lord himself, he used to serve under the Vijayanagara Kings. A hunting enthusiast, Kempe Gowda once saw his dog being chased by a hare. Amused as well as impressed up this incident, he started calling Bangalore as 'Gandu Bhoomi' (heroic place). He, with the help of King Achutaraya, built a mud fort in Bangalore and inside it founded the towns of Balepet, Cottonpet, and Chickpet. Later, his son got the four watchtowers erected on the boundaries of the city, visible even today. 

Reign of the Sultans, Marathas, and British

In the year 1638, the Vijayanagara Empire fell to the Sultan of Bijapur, Mohammed Adil Shah. For the next sixty years, the city was under the rule of the Sultans. Thereafter, Mughals took over the city. However, their rule did not last too long and in 1687, they sold the kingdom to King Chikkadevaraja Wodeyar of Mysore. He got another fort built in Bangalore, to the south of the one built by Kempe Gowda. Hyder Ali received Bangalore in the form of jagir in 1759, from Krishna Raja Wodeyar II. He converted the city into an army town. 

In the year 1799, when Tipu Sultan died, the British returned the kingdom back to Krishna Raja Wodeyar III. However, the British again took over the kingdom in 1831, citing misrule by Krishna Raja Wodeyar III as the reason. It was under British rule that Bangalore started developing into a modern city, with all the contemporary facilities like railways, telegraphs, post, and telegraphs, etc. The city was again given back to the Wodeyars in 1881. However, since the British Commissioners were based in Bangalore, its development into a contemporary city continued unabated. 

Re-naming as Bengaluru (Bengalooru)

The city of Bangalore got renamed Bengalooru in the year 2006. Even though the term 'Bangalore' is still very common, now the official name of the city is Bengalooru.

It encompasses a 42.3 km (26.3 mi) elevated and underground rail network, comprising 41 stations. The metro line between Sampige Road and Peenya Industrial Area was inaugurated on 1 March 2014. auto-rickshaws: Three-wheeled, green and yellow auto-rickshaws referred to as autos, are a popular form of transport. They are metered and can accommodate up to three passengers.

Taxi: Taxi service within Bangalore is provided by several operators. The taxis are commonly called City Taxis and are usually available only on call. Taxis are metered and are generally more expensive than auto-rickshaws.

Buses: Buses operated by city operators are also a means of public transport available in Bangalore. While commuters can buy tickets on boarding these buses, BMTC also provides an option of a bus pass to frequent users. BMTC also runs air-conditioned luxury buses on major routes and even, operates Airport Transport Service city to International Airport.

Taste the delicious Pani Puri here and I’m sure you will become a regular here. Apart from pani puri, they also serve other snacks like dahi puri, aloo chat and paapdi chat.

Khan Saheb Grills and Rolls – Indiranagar, Bangalore

Located at the ground floor of the Sri Shiva Sai Complex in Indiranagar, this is one of the best street food places in Bangalore to have delicious and crunchy rolls and grills. Both vegetarian and non–vegetarian street foods are served here and the prices are extremely reasonable. Some of the famous items served are Mixed Vegetable tikka Roll,paneer mushroom, babycorn tikka roll, mutton buna and many others with exclusive add ons like kathi wrap, single eggroll, etc.

Sri Sairam’s Chats and Juice – Malleshwaram

Be it the famous Sai Ram’s Special or the mouth-watering Dahi puri, this chat stall at Margosa Road, Malleshwaram has everything more to offer than you can ever expect. The person serving here always has a warm and heartily smile to add a bit of extra flavor to your already delicious food.They serve a numerous variety of chats which includes wafers chat, chips masala, disco chat, crazy masala and a lot more. It now also sells specially prepared home-made chocolates from Ooty. Puchka’s – Marathahalli

After some desi South Indian dishes and some delicious chats, its time to head to taste some lovely Indori food. This stall is located near the Purva Rivera Apartments at Silver Spring Layout in Marathahalli, Bangalore. The price here are relatively high compared to the ones told before but, it is in no match to the wonderful taste of the food served and the hygiene maintained here. Some of the famous dishes served here are the hot dogs, puchkas and many more.

Karnataka Bhel House – Basavanagudi

Hop in to this purely vegetarian and outdoor seating famous chat stall located at Uma Theatre Road, Chamarajapet in Basavanagudi during the evening to enjoy the warm sunset with some utterly delicious street food in Bangalore. Tikki Tikki – Koramangala

The name itself clearly indicates that this stall at Indiranagar serves one of the best vada pavs in Bangalore. There are a number of flavors for the vada pav including paneer, schezwan, aloo and many more.They also serve yummy burgers and french fries too. The prices are quite low and I personally recommend the Veg Tikki Vada Pav which is one of the best street food in Bangalore.

 Shahi Darbar – Yeshawanthpur

Located very next to the M S Rammiah ground in Mattikere – Yeshawanthpur, this chat stall offers yummy and extra delicious rolls which are quite low priced and absolutely delightful. This street food place is often crowded by studentsfor its mouthwatering food served and the quality maintained here. Some of the best rolls are double paneer roll, double egg chicken roll and the simplest veg roll.

Spicy Corner – Jeevanabheema Nagar

Last but not the least, this food stall at Jeevanabheema nagar serves one of the best spicy street food in Bangalore. From the spicy hot tava paratha to the delicious dahi puri, this stall serves a number of lovely dishes which are reasonably priced and equally yummy. Some of the best food served are paneer fried rice, sav dahi puri, szechwan noodles, baby corn manchurian, aaloo paratha and gobhi chilli.

Mavalli Tiffin Room, (Lalbagh road) for the perfect meal or small eats. There is a queue and limited tickets only. So make sure you go there early.

Lakeview Ice cream parlour (MG road or Indiranagar 100 ft road)

This parlour has existed in bangalore for almost 80 years. Nice flavours and old taste and feel. 

The Only Place 

The Only Place is something like a Goan Shack, right in the centre of town (just off Brigade Road). This is also always packed, so you may need to wait for a table. The menu is old-school and not gourmet in the least. Pepper steak, burgers, pies and the like, there is something for everyone. Go with a bunch of friends and try out a variety of items. The burgers and the apple pie never disappoint.

Toscano is a must-visit for a couple of reasons. The authentic Italian food is one of those, as is the fresh produce used. But also, for its location. UB City is not only a mall or an office complex, it was far ahead of its time, a cyber hub of sorts before any such existed across India. And for that, you must head there.

The seafood restaurant in Taj Gateway Hotel, just off MG Road is a seafood lover's dream come true. The flavors are bold and options plenty. Prawns, crab, fish, whatever be your choice of meat, there is a great variety to choose from. Pair the curries (Allapuzzah Meen Curry is my go-to dish) with appams or neer dosas to enjoy them.
