About
Pathiramanal Island is a small island just about 20 hectares of land in the middle of Lake Vembanad. situated in Muhamma panchayat of Alappuzha district located about 16 km from Alappuzha. The name 'Pathiramanal' means 'sands of night'. is a haven for hundreds of rare birds migrating from different parts of the world. The island lies between Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom and is accessible only by boat. It is about 1.5 km from Muhamma boat jetty and about 13 km from Alappuzha. The green island thus forms an ideal place for a break in the journey while on a backwater cruise. The mainland Alappuzha has a vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh water rivers crisscrossing it and is a district of immense natural beauty. The Travancore kings gave the island to a Portuguese sailor Andrew Pereira for lease. In 1979 after Land Reforms Acts were enforced in the State, the property came under government ownership. Till the late seventies of the 20th century, 14 worker families resided in the island, who were later rehabilitated on the mainland in the Muhamma panchayath.
