Mangalavanam is a popular bird sanctuary frequented by tourists, bird lovers, ornithologists as well as locals. It is situated behind the High Court, in center of Kochi City. The Mangalavanam Bird sanctuary, renowned as the green lung. Mangalavanam provides relief for visitors from the mess of the city life. The wide varieties of species found here make Mangalavanam a must-visit-site for nature lovers reaching Kochi. It has been declared as a protected area since 31st August 2004. A shallow pond with various types of mangrove vegetation covers a major part of Mangalavanam. Currently, the area under protection is only a small patch of greenery with a tidal wetland with an extent of 2.74 ha. On both sides of the way to the sanctuary, you can see varieties of vegetation which gets thicker nearer to the sanctuary. Inside the premises of Mangalavanam, you can find a reserve of wide varieties of tropical vegetation including palm, teak, banyan, plantain, bamboo etc. as well as various species of mangrove which are in the verge of getting extinct. To the left of the entrance, near to the information center, the herbs suggested for each birth star in Indian astrology are exhibited. Many of these 27 species are now rarely found around us. There is a watchtower inside Mangalavanam, which gives a view of the whole reserve. As per records, the total number of bird species found here so far is 72, including migratory birds which make seasonal visits. 17 species of butterflies have been found in this area. Mangalavanam provides habitat for 51 species of spiders belonging to 40 Genus and 16 families. This represents 27% of the total families reported from India.
