Top Station
Overview
Top Station is the most favorite tourist destination and a hill station in Munnar in the state of Kerala, where you can feel the clouds are flying very close to you. Wild slopes and dense forests surround it. Top Station is about 32 kilometers from Munnar on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road in the Theni District of Tamil Nadu and Idukki district of Kerala. 1700 meters high in altitude, Top station nuzzles along the borders of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Top Station derived its name from its being the upper terminus of the Kottagudi Aerial Ropeway. It was also the location of the terminal railway station on the Kundala Valley Railway, built in 1902 between Munnar, Kundalai and this low point in the crest of the hills above steep cliffs. It’s aptly named Top Station since this is the main abode to the highest tea plantations of India.
Top station is one among the top mountain in the Western Ghats and offers a panoramic view of the majestic Western Ghats. Top Station is an eminent tourist destination mainly for its beautiful, scenic beauty and rare Neelkunrinji flower beds. Neelkurinji flowers bloom only once every 12 years. During the blooming year, Neelakurunji flowers add a unique fragrance to Munnar tea plantation making the glorious hills appear blue in color. From the ticket counter entrance, you need to walk down approximately 100 to 150 steps to reach another thrilling and exciting viewpoint. That is the actual place where you can have a 360-degree view of the valley. But it will be breathing taking exercise to reach that place. Definitely not to try for old age people. If you have having heart problems and breathing issues do not try to walk down. Because getting to the top is much difficult, it is very steep while climbing back. The best time to visit Top station is from April to May. Top Station is easily accessible from Munnar as there are frequent buses from there and you can also make use of the cabs available.
