Overview
Srirangapatna fort, popularly known as Tipu Sultan Fort also known as Tipu's palace is one of the most popular monuments in India. located in the historical town Srirangapatna, 1.5 km from Ranganathaswamy Temple, 3.5 km from Sri Nimishambha Temple, 5.5 km from Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, 15 km from Mysore Palace, 20 km from Brindavan Gardens, 36 km from Somanathapura 126 km from Bangalore.
Srirangapatna Fort is Built by the Timmanna Nayaka in 1454, the fort came to prominence during the rule of Tipu Sultan. this magnificent fort is considered to the strongest fort in India, The Srirangapatna Fort has four main entrances known by the names of Delhi, Bangalore, Mysore and Water and Elephant gates. The fort has a double wall defense system, which is what makes it impenetrable. The legendary Tipu Sultan's residence was inside this fort. Hence, it is also known as Tipu Sultan Fort.
The architectural style of the fort is supposed to be Indo-Islamic and there is a Persian inscription on the gateway that announces its date of construction. The fort was fully fortified and the architecture was modified with the help of French architects to meet the growing needs of saving against invaders. The river Kaveri surrounds the fort in one of the sides. The fort is protected in the West and Northern directions by river Cauvery.
There is a simple structure within Srirangapatna Fort - with about 40 ft. high walls on three sides - which is believed to be the "rocket court" or the launch pad from where Tipu's men used to launch their missiles. Lalmahal – which was the then residence of the most audacious king of Mysore, Tipu Sultan’s residence was also housed within the Srirangapatna Fort. But it was completely demolished by the British in 1799, and the spot is today marked by a mere mound, with a notice board on top of it. There are two dungeons within the fort precincts, These dungeons were used to detain the British soldiers who were arrested. Srirangapatna Fort also houses a mosque and the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna, that is famous for its gopuram and thick fort-like walls. that is yet another important landmark and tourist attraction.
Various paintings like 'The storming of Seringapattam' by Sir Robert Ker can be found on the walls. The paintings depicting the glorious victory of Tipu Sultan over British, also adorn the walls. Do not miss to see the Chaturvimsati pillars that bore carvings of 24 forms of Vishnu, at the inner entrance of the fort. The tomb of Tipu Sultan can be found in the vicinity of the fort. The fort is scenically located on an island formed by the river Cauvery. Sound and light show starts at 7.20 PM every day. Per person 50 INR. Free entry for Kids below 12 Years. The 40-minute show narrates historical tales, starting from the mythology associated with Srirangapatna, the construction of the fort, Dasara celebrations and the shifting of the capital from Mysuru to Srirangapatna. It also gives a peek into the regime of Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, Chikkadevaraja Wodeyar, and military conquest and achievements. Apart from the fort, replicas of the Summer Palace, Jumma Masjid, cannons, arches, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Bailey’s Dungeon and dovecote have been created in the show, apart from the existing structure, to narrate stories from history in a realistic manner. this show available only in the Kannada language no translation available.
